Darwin’s simulation of artificial selection was powerful, his proposed mechanism of natural selection and random variations is easy to grasp, and his skill at dispersing counter-opinion is unrivalled. Moreover, his argument for the interpretation of a common general origin was skillfully founded, and at the end of The Origin of Species it seemed to many that Darwin had refuted possible objections to one exception to his theory.
Regardless of his synthetic vision, there is only one body of evidence that has shaped Darwin, a group he has acknowledged and known that his theory is insufficiently explained, at least until that day. Darwin was puzzled by a pattern in the fossil record that seemed to document the sudden geological emergence of animals, in life within a short period of history, called the Silurian period, but which was later known as the Cambrian period.
This book documents Darwin’s greatest suspicion, what happened to him, and tests an important event in a crucial period of geological history in which vast numbers of animal forms suddenly appeared, with no evolutionary ancestors preserved in the fossil record; a mysterious event that Darwin himself often referred to as the “Cambrian Explosion.”
In this book, I'm going to show how an isolated anomaly, which Darwin recognized as "a transient one", has become a fundamental problem for all evolutionary biology: the problem of the emergence of biological forms and information.
To know where that problem comes from, and why evolutionary biology is in crisis, we need to start from scratch, with Darwin’s own skepticism, with the fossil evidence that gave birth to that skepticism, and with the vociferous debate between two of the most famous naturalists of the Victorian era: the famous Harvard paleontologist Louis Agassiz and Charles Darwin himself.
