Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemistry Challenge of Evolution - Publisher Introduction
Why this book?!
Darwin says in his book The Origin of Species: “If a complex organ that is unlikely to form can be proved by many successive minor modifications, my theory collapses completely.” Although this audacity may count in Darwin’s favor, it will count against his current supporters.
Well... maybe someone will tweet out of the squadron, and they'd rather follow the evidence than follow the multitude.
Throughout his studies, and even after he graduated with his Ph.D. in 1978, Behe had no reason to doubt Darwinism. But when he began to pay attention to the incredible complexity of the molecular machines he periodically dealt with as a biochemist, the picture changed. Behe began to doubt the validity of Darwinian interpretation of the origin and diversity of life as he began to deal with bacterial whips. After reading Denton's book, Behe decided to return to a broader examination of the evidence, and came out with a result that would later become one of the pillars of the new theory that would replace Darwinian evolution, and would also become the reason for his writing of this book; irreducible complexity.
Darwin’s theory, as can be seen from the earlier passage of the theorist’s words, requires that any complex organ that has arisen in the course of evolution has been created by several successive modifications, i.e. that the sum of the modifications that have created the complex organ is reducible or gradual. But when Behe looked at the bacterial whip, there was no reason to doubt that this system might be reducible, and so if he removed any part of it, he would not continue to work.
He didn’t believe himself, and he said that he must have been wrong, and that someone must have had an acceptable explanation for how such things arose. But he was stunned when no one guessed him. He fell into his hands, and he felt cheated all these years when he believed that Darwinism was the undisputable explanation.
The New York Times published a review of the book a week before it was published, after which several reviews of the book appeared in popular magazines such as Nature, Time, the Wall Street Journal, Science, and other popular and specialized magazines, and was ranked by World Magazine and the National Review of the book 100th century.
There are hundreds of critical articles in the most famous journals and periodicals, criticisms from many prominent scientists, and debates in many American and European universities. Everyone tries to respond, and no one comes up with an acceptable explanation for how irreducible systems originated in the Darwinian framework. And even a statement from the university where Behe works, disavowing Behe’s ideas of irreducible complexity and intelligent design.
The Dover City School District in Pennsylvania decided to read a statement to biology students in the school that evolution theory is not the only theory that attempts to explain the origin and diversity of life, and that there is another theory called intelligent design, and that students if they want to expand on it can refer to the book (Panda and People) in the school library. The statement was enough for the opponents of Behe and the theory of design to try to obtain a judgment not invalidating the behavior of the school administration. Scientific. So what?!
In his article "Is Intelligent Design a Science or Not?" published in response to the judge's ruling, Behe says: "The day after the judge's ruling, on December 21, 2005, as was the case previously, the cell is going through an amazing complexity and functional mechanism, which would have been perceived as being designed in any other context. On December 21, 2005, as was the case previously, there is no explanation for the molecular mechanism in life other than design except for dreamy speculation and fabricated stories."
The problem of defining science, or separating science from false science, or demarcation problem, is one of the most difficult problems in the field of philosophy of science, because the mere attempt of a judge, who has nothing to do with scientific practice or philosophy of science, to intervene in the matter, as well as to resolve it, is doomed to failure before it begins.
The concept that Behe brought here in this book, irreducible complexity, has confused Darwinists the most, and it is a disaster that his biggest witness to the fall of the theory is his own proof of concept. From complex molecular machines in the cell, to the human mind, gradual evolution fails by picking the agent through mutations entirely in explanation, and we have to use the concept of intelligent design (deliberate teleological arrangement of highly complex parts to understand biological systems).
If it is a last word before the end, it is thanks to all the members of the team who contributed to the first edition of this book, as well as to the readers who have written to us since the first edition expressing their joy at the emergence of the Arabic translation. And apologies to those who were unable to get the first edition and waited for this edition a lot, and perhaps our attempt to improve this edition as much as possible will be useful to them. Then advice to those who have read and who will read, a little pain before the verdict.
