The story of DNA discoverer James Watson with the promotion of racism in the name of science
Genealogist James Watson, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1953 for his collaboration with Crick in the discovery of the structure of DNA, is the same one that infuriated everyone in 2007 when he suggested that black Africans were genetically inferior to white Europeans.
Echoing the arguments of ancient scientific racists, Watson stated that the cause of the inferiority of blacks was evolution, explaining that "there is no good reason to expect that it must be proved that the intellectual capacities of geographically isolated humans in their evolution have evolved identically. Our desire to retain the idea of equal mental capacities as the common heritage of humanity will not be sufficient to prove this."[1]
He also said that "all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours; while all tests say the opposite."[1] He wished that everyone was equal, but objected because "those who deal with black employees find that to be untrue."[1]
Watson was widely condemned worldwide for his words, from voices within and outside the scientific community. The Independent immediately reported that there was outrage at the DNA finder's statements,2 and The Daily Mail reported that "the Science Museum in London prevented Watson from speaking out after his statements that blacks are less intelligent than whites,"3 and the Guardian commented that "Nobel winner Watson flew home with his ears."4
When the papers went up against him, Watson retracted what he had said, telling CNN that there was “no scientific basis for belief” in the matter, but that it was a worthless apology. Why?
The traditional evolutionary view assumes that the present human race (Homo sapiens) has evolved from ape-like ancestors in some region of Africa, and therefore that present Africans (because of their geographic isolation, Watson says) have not evolved sufficiently to differ from the semi-human ancestors that existed 200,000 years ago. The value equality of human races is based only on the traditional religious vision, where humans descend according to that vision from one pair, and are no less valuable according to their geographical isolation or the amount of modification of the genetic content to which they were subjected or the size of their skulls or any of those evolutionary myths. These myths in the tenth century were welcomed and open to major pages of newspapers and scientific journals, but now they are dragged by the social and political ills.
Although these consequences of assuming the validity of Darwinian evolution are serious and catastrophic, they are not the reason for saying that evolutionary theory is wrong. Many scientists have put forward their evidence for the failure of this theory, including Dr. Stephen Mayer in his books Darwin Doubt and Signature in the Cell, Dr. Michael Behe in his books Darwin's Black Box and the Edge of Evolution, and Dr. Jonathan Wells in his books Evolution Icons and Amma (The Science of Evolution). In his book From Darwin to Hitler: Evolutionary Ethics, Eugenics, and Racism in Germany, Richard Waikart concluded that evolutionary ethics played a major role, not only in Eugenics, but also in Euthanasia, infanticide, abortion, and genocide.
