However, if you take science as a single source of knowledge, or if you see scientific practice as a sacred and untouchable process, you are keeping in mind a completely wrong image of science, and the aim of the book is to correct that image.
This is not a book to attack science or scientists. But, if you take science as a single source of knowledge, or if you see scientific practice as a sacred and untouchable process, you keep in your mind a completely wrong image of science, and the book's goal is to correct that image.
In recent decades, the cult of science has become widespread, raising the question of whether this popular image of science is true, or is it a popular myth?
The authors consider science as a human practice, and analyze the way the scientific community behaves in cases where it detects fraud, and ask legitimate questions, perhaps the most important of which is the question of whether science is immune from within against those who come with their dogmatic preconceived convictions in a scientific costume?
The authors argue that cheating is not the problem in scientific practice, but that the scientific community has dealt with it (some of which are admittedly, some of which are impervious to accountability). What does it mean for a scientist to visit the data to prove his theory, and then go through it peacefully for decades – or perhaps hundreds – without finding out who is in favor or against it? What does it mean to be discovered only by chance?
After all, scientists are human beings who, like any other human group, are guilty of fraud and deception, as well as of honesty and credibility. It is not that the scientific community is a deceitful organization, but that the scientific community is a human group, like the rest of humanity, and it is not their practice of science that will keep them from making the usual mistakes.
