The obstacles that evolution must overcome
Darwinian mechanisms face a number of obstacles as they attempt to coordinate the successful evolutionary changes necessary for the development of complex, irreducible molecular machines.
Availability: Are the parts of the complex, irreducible biochemical system that will evolve as germs?
Synchronization: Are these parts together in time to co-develop these complex structures?
Localization: Even when these parts are available in time to participate in the development of the complex system, can these parts be separated from the systems that are involved in their previous formation without harming those systems to become available to share with others to develop the complex system in its specified place?
Interfering Cross Reactions: Assuming that the required parts are available at the right place and time, how can the unneeded and disruptive parts be excluded from the place of construction of the system under development?
Interface Compatibility: Are the surfaces of the parts that are supposed to share with each other to develop a system – as the machine gears are fond of – properly positioned to make the resulting system effective?
Order of Assembly: Assuming that all the right parts are available only in the right place at the right time and also that the surfaces are compatible, will the parts be assembled in the right order to form the effective system?
Configuration: If the parts manage to assemble in the right order, will they assemble in the right way – vacuum – to produce an effective system?
To know the importance of overcoming these obstacles, imagine that you are a contractor who asked you to build a house. To succeed in building this house, you must succeed in overcoming all these obstacles.
First you need to know if all the necessary materials for building the house, such as bricks, wooden beams, power cords, glass panels and pipes, are available in the market and can be purchased.
Second, you need to make sure that you can get these materials within an appropriate time frame. If you lose one of these materials, you will not be able to perform your task as a contractor in a timely manner. The availability of these materials should be synchronized with the time when they are needed.
Third, you have to move all this material to the place where the house is built.
Fourth, you have to keep the construction site clean of other materials that may cause damage to the house or interfere with the construction process, such as dumping radioactive waste or laying mines in it, because this will prevent the benefit of the house, even if the construction is done. As a less extreme example, we give a simpler example such as the presence of an excessive amount of scrap in the construction site, such as tin cans, toy parts and scattered papers, then it will be difficult to find the real building materials from all this building site.
Fifth, it is not enough to obtain the necessary materials for the construction of the house only; as a contractor, you need to make sure that these materials fit together. It is true that you need screws, pipes, water systems and electrical wires with the direction in which they will be placed; but if the pipes are not suitable for the screws and the pipes are not suitable for building a house properly. It is true that any measure of these materials can be used in the construction of different houses; but what matters.
Sixth, even with all the required materials in the right place, it is necessary to make sure that all of these materials are put in the right order. At the beginning of the construction of the house must begin to lay the foundations, if you start to raise the walls and then try to lay the foundations will be the fate of the house collapse. You must collect the right materials in the right order to produce a good house.
Seventh, and finally, even if you are collecting the right materials in the right order, it must be done the right way. That’s why you have to use engineers, electrical technicians, and water system specialists to collect the right materials in the right order. For example, it is good to assemble bricks in the right way to build the wall; but if it is done diagonally, any push to the wall will cause it to collapse and the house will not be built properly. It is not enough to assemble materials in the right order.
After all this study, as a contractor, I found that these obstacles can be overcome because as a smart element, you can see the whole picture and know the final house and what you need to provide for it, and you can coordinate all the tasks in a way that you can overcome all these obstacles. You have an architectural plan and know what materials are required and where to bring them and how to get them to the place of construction in the right time. You also know how to secure the place from thieves and vandals and weather and anything that you might ruin the building efforts.
But Darwinian mechanisms – natural selection and random variation – know nothing of this. All you know is how to modify vital structures and maintain these modifications that show immediate benefit to the organism – in the sense of improving survival and increasing offspring. Darwinian mechanisms rely on real-time reward. If these mechanisms were a contractor to build, they would have built the wall before the foundations were built, because the desired benefit of building the wall is to prevent vandals from entering the building place.
Now imagine how Darwinian mechanisms will be able to overcome these seven obstacles to the development of the bacterium. The beginning will be a bacterium that does not have a flagellum and does not have genes that encode the flagellum proteins nor even homologous genes for these genes. This bacterium is supposed to evolve over time into a bacterium that does not have the full range of genes that produce an effective flagellum. Can Darwinian mechanisms coordinate all the biochemical events required?
