Is cancer really a disease?
In 1958, Julian Huxley wrote that once cancer "begins to cross the threshold of anatomy, the resulting tumor can logically be considered a new biological species." In 1991, evolutionary biologists Van Valen and Virginia Maiorana argued that Hela cells (a tissue culture of a widely used cell lineage) should be considered a single-cell tumor.
Molecular biologist Peter Duesberg and his colleagues made a similar observation in 2011, stating that cancer originated from healthy cells "is a form of speciation." The most common characteristics of cancer cells are that they have very few or very high numbers of chromosomes, or that their chromosomes are broken and rearranged.
Changes in the nuclear pattern can actually produce speciation in plants. Usually, when a species is hybridized, their different chromosomes do not mix during cell division, and the result is that the hybrids are sterile. But sometimes, chromosomes are automatically multiplied in plant hybrids, and each chromosome has an opposite counterpart and the offspring becomes a new species that can reproduce. The doubling of the chromosomes of the Russian scientist Georgii Karpekhenko enabled the production of a new species that does not exist in nature with radishes and cabbage cheering. (But unfortunately, the result – called radokabage – from the root of the cabbage and the head of the radish.)
So doubling chromosomes can lead to speciation in plants, but it does not lead to open-ended evolution of new forms demanded by evolutionary theory. Those who consider cancer to be an example of evolutionary action should pay attention to the bigger question, not whether cancer cells can be considered new species, but whether cancer supports the grand physical narrative of the common decline of irrational evolutionary processes.
