In my doctoral studies, I have learned that scientists who research the past often think much like detectives who look for the criminal.
During my doctoral studies, I have learned that scientists who research the past often think in a way that is very similar to the way investigators look for the criminal, investigators take a number of suspects into account to identify the perpetrator when trying to reconstruct a crime scene, and in a similar way, natural history scientists – such as geologists, archaeologists, fossilists, cosmologists and evolutionary biologists – assess the weight and value of competing explanations in an attempt to find out why a specific event occurred in the past, a structure, or a scientific approach.
For scientists trying to explain the origin of life, one of the most important keys to solving the mystery is life itself, its structure, function and composition.
“The nature of life and its origin are becoming inseparable,” Harmke Kamenga put it, “a fundamental question lies at the heart of life’s creation: what exactly is it that we are trying to explain?”
The discovery by Watson and Crick, and then the discoveries that immediately followed, completely changed our understanding of the nature of life. It also defined the features of life that scientists are now “trying” to “explain” their origin. This chapter tells the story of the discovery that opened this revolution in biological understanding, the story of the double helix. It will turn out that this historical background is necessary to store some of the information of the past chapters, and to evaluate competing ideas about the origin of life and vital information.
