Did we really experience the general common regression, or did we just assume it was real?
For evolutionary biologists, the assumption of a single origin of life is a step to which the classical ideal of being both good news and bad news applies.
The good news is that when UCD is followed as a deductive result: all organisms must be related in a large tree of life. The place of UCD is thus preserved as a proven historical fact.
Oddly enough, the bad news is exactly the same. Assuming that abiogenesis is unique for once in Earth’s history, the overall common descent follows as a deductive result; but it is now untestable.
No biological evidence, however convincing, can challenge this theory!
Assume one event of life's origin, and because of the law of biogenesis, the last common ancestor LUCA must exist, with innumerable transformation pathways connecting that primitive cell to all other forms of life.
Abstract; every living organism, every species on this planet, will necessarily fall within what might be called the "LUCA horizon"; no matter what may actually be observed.
– Paul Nelson, philosopher of biology (acting)
