In 1994, Stanford University Press published a book, The Mass-Extinction Debates: How Science Works in a Crisis, for a group of scientists and philosophers.
This book was edited by paleontologist Dr. William Glenn, who fortunately had a fair share of the "history of science" study.
In the mid-1990s, the book was the first of its kind to draw the attention of the scientific community, which was rumored at the time that the extinction of the dinosaurs was caused by the consequences of a meteorite impact, to the strong controversy that occurred among scientists specializing in this extinction, but more importantly what we are trying to highlight here is the behavior of scientists who have remained in constant conflict about this, which is why the subtitle of the book "How Science Works in a Time of Crisis."
“These papers, written by historians, sociologists, philosophers, and co-scientists, provide an extraordinary opportunity to observe works of science that are hidden from view in quieter times.”
The group of scientists who believe that the best interpretation of the synchro evidence of dinosaur fossils is their extinction from the consequences of the impact of the meteorite, succeeded in promoting their research among journalists and media, and then allowed themselves to monopolize the talk on behalf of "all scientists", and thus became the opposite of specialized scientists studying researchers, they do not exist!
The book goes into much more than that, and deals with how specialization, systematic discipline, and intolerance of competing hypotheses influence the interpretation of the same evidence, paradigm, and other factors that are the subject of permanent study of the disciplines of philosophy, history, and sociology of science.
Glenn tells us that the controversy over the extinction of the dinosaurs has spawned 2,500 papers and books from opposing sides about this extinction event!!!
2,500 papers from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s in just one of many points related to the study of extinction events!
2500 papers before computers and the Internet spread as they are now, and before the current search engines and big databases existed!!!
Some scientists, including J. Wyatt Durham, who supervised Glenn's Ph.D. thesis and was president of the Society of Paleontologists in 1963, stated in April 1993 that he did not originally believe in mass extinction events.
Dorram said that in 1993, when the conflict was raging between two teams arguing over the cause of the mass extinction, was it a consequence of the collision or a consequence of volcanic eruptions?
This gives us a glimpse of how wide the controversy is within the scientific community!
Many documentary viewers may not have heard of a disagreement about the extinction of dinosaurs, but geology students in science schools have heard a lot about the differences between scientists about the hypotheses of the extinction that occurred at the end of the Cretaceous and the beginning of the Pleogene, but often not even geology students in science schools have heard of a disagreement about the existence of extinction events at all!
Glenn wants to explain how science works in a crisis, but what we want everyone to know is how science works in normal situations.
It can be shortened in this way, the student enters the scientific field to know at the beginning all that he can know from his predecessors in the field of information, hypotheses, facts, evidence and others, and it is his role once he enters the field, to verify the validity of what has been reached, or the error of what has been reached!
The nature of scientific work is constant constant conflict, constant constant controversy, and the scientific field would not have been able to progress, had it not been for the constant state of constant disagreement and controversy!
So the Temple of Scientific Consensus is the most dangerous of all the scientific process. Those who promote them among us need to understand very well what they are promoting.
You bum.
